Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

Uruguay

Colonia del Sacramento

A short boat trip across the Parana River from Buenos Aires, but a world away, lies the small, charming town of Colonia. One of the best preserved
sites in Uruguay, it’s a city frozen in its colonial past. Reminiscent of old 16th century Europe, venture around its cobbled streets and peruse through its various antique shops, plazas, bars, and restaurants.

For a more extensive stay there are lovely hotels located right in the historic quarter and also on the town’s fringes where pine trees and farmsteads dot the landscape.

Punta del Este

Few resorts in South America rival Punta del Este for glamour. It might be geographically located in Uruguay, but it’s where the gliterrati and elite of Buenos Aires make their home for the summer. A big step above Argentina’s only main beach resort, Mar del Plata, this Uruguayan resort area has become the new place to see and be seen. There’s an excellent range of hotels as well as superb seafood restaurants and traditional steakhouses. If sun, sea, sand are what you’re looking for after your South American adventure, then look no further.
