Visit La Paz
To the country’s west, resting at the foot of Mount Illimani, is the high-altitude city of La Paz. A metropolis of the mountains, La Paz is a kaleidoscope of colonial architecture, Spanish churches, Andean markets and towering office blocks. Although the city’s most spectacular buildings are all overshadowed by the magnificent ice-capped peaks of Mount Illimani. Visit La Paz, it’s often the first stop on Bolivian holidays, has plenty to keep you entertained.
After you have adapted to the altitude, take a tour of the colonial city centre, packed with plazas, beautiful churches and an assortment of museums. Why not hike to the Mirador Killi Killi where you can witness a panoramic view of La Paz? Or visit the famous Witches’ Market? A dizzying display of Bolivian folk doctors offering a selection of potions and talismans, as well as a number of stalls selling t-shirts and jewellery, the Witches’ Market – much like the rest of La Paz – is a bizarre mixture of old and new.
While those in possession of steely nerves and good cycling skills might even try biking the Death Road, the most dangerous road in the world. Although be warned, as the name suggests it is hardly the safest daytrip available.
