northeast brazil

Home to the unrivalled Carnaval celebrations of Salvador, northeast Brazil is the one of the country’s newest and most exciting destinations.

Despite the rapid increase in tourism over the past decade, the region still clings to its colonial roots, with countless churches dating back to the 17th Century. Brazil’s first colonial capital, the city of Salvador would make for an excellent base to explore the tropical coast. Further north are the coastal cities of Recife and Fortaleza, with some of the finest beaches in South America. Known as “a terra da felicidade” (land of happiness) by the locals, this naturally stunning coast is home to everything from historic colonial cities to deserted stretches of soft sand.

things to do

  • Stroll through Salvador’s colonial Pelourinho district and you might be lucky to see a display of the spectacular martial art, capoeira originated in Brazil.
  • For a bit of the great outdoors head to Chapada Diamantina National Park and hike to Cachoeira da Fumaca.
  • Morro Branco is one of the most impressive in the region, with dark orange cliffs and sand dunes jutting up behind the golden beach. It’s an hour and a half’s drive away from Fortaleza, but worth spending a day there.
  • For colonial charm, the enchanting city of Olinda becomes a boisterous beacon for revellers of all sorts when it merges every year with neighbouring Recife for the most exciting Brazil Carnival in the north and maybe the whole continent.
  • Once visited by Charles Darwin, the  island of Fernando de Noronha is home to a wealth of marine life and some of the best beaches in the world.
