Resting on Colombia’s highest plateau 2,640m above sea level is the ever-changing capital city of Bogotá

Not only is it a world-class city with a wealth of things to do, its location near the centre of Colombia makes it an ideal base to explore further afield. With a newfound exuberance that has brought out the city’s artistic heart for the world to see, the streets are a cultural blend of cosmopolitan and colonial. From the city’s historic centre of La Candelaria to the Andean mountains outside its borders, it’s quickly becoming one of South America’s most popular cities.

things to do

  • Art can be found everywhere in Bogotá, nowhere more so than on a graffiti walking tour, which displays the beautiful and unique street art that decorates the city.
  • Set against a mountainous backdrop, Villa de Leyva is a colonial city frozen in time, with gorgeous cobblestone streets and terracotta rooftops making a nice change of pace.
  • Standing high over the city, Mount Monserrate offers spectacular views of Bogotá and the site of a 17th century church that houses the famous El Señor Caído statue.
  • The Museu del Oro (Gold Museum) is a must-see for anyone with an interest in history. Housing over 50,000 tonnes of gold, it brings the legend of El Dorado into reality.

best time to visit

July-August

Bogotá’s high altitude means it doesn’t get the high temperatures experienced in other areas, although rain is a possibility at any time of year.
