This fixed departure tour will take in some incredible sights from vast open salt plains, to otherworldly ancient volcanoes, wineries, historic towns, this trip has it all. Day 1: Departure from Dublin to Buenos Aires (via a European city)
Day 2: Buenos Aires. Arrival and reception at the airport. Transfer to the hotel. Afterwards, visit to the city, touring the most interesting places of Buenos Aires, return to the hotel.
Day 3: Buenos Aires, Salta, Purmamarca. Transfer to the airport to board the flight to Salta. Arrival and reception at the airport. Before traveling to the Humahuaca’s Gorge, we will make a short visit to the city of Salta and the MAAM. (Museum of archaeology of high mountain). After lunch, where we will taste empanadas, departure to Purmamarca. Accommodation. Total traveled distance: 207 km (129 miles). Travel time: 4 hours. Max. altitude: 2,324 masl (7,625 ft)
Day 4: Purmamarca, Las Señoritas Gorge, El Horconal, Purmamarca. Today we will enjoy the Humahuaca’s Gorge but in a different way to know two unique landscapes. We continue to Tilcara where we visit its pucara and the main square. Then we continue towards Uquia to visit the Church of San Francisco de Paula. From this town we will depart towards the Las Señoritas Gorge and after an hour walk we will arrive to a site of a shocking reddish color. After taking the box lunch we return to Uquia and continue to Humahuaca. Brief tour around this city and departure towards the mountains of the Horconal or as the locals call the Fourteen Colors Mount. There in the midst of this landscape, we will take a snack. Return to Purmamarca. Total traveled distance: 319 km (198 miles). Travel time: 9-10 hours. Max. altitude: 4,200 masl (13,780 ft)
Day 5: Purmamarca, Tolar Grande. In the morning departure towards Salinas Grandes to transit across the Puna and to arrive in San Antonio de los Cobres, where we take lunch. We start our journey to Tolar Grande, passing the Pocito Salt Pit, the labyrinth, the Seven Curves and the Devil’s Salt Pit. Arrival in Tolar Grande. Accommodation and dinner. Total traveled distance: 319 km (198 miles). Travel time: 9 hours. Max. altitude: 4,500 masl (14,764 ft)
Day 6: Tolar Grande, La Casualidad Mine, Cono de Arita, Tolar Grande. Departure to “La Casualidad” Camp located at 4,200 masl It used to be the base for Julia Mine (5,505 masl). Free time to explore the abandoned buildings of this true “ghost town”. Lunch. While returning we will visit the Cono de Arita, located in the Arizaro Salt Flat, the largest salt flat in Argentina. The Cone is a striking volcanic formation 122 meters high. Short trek to the base and return. Dinner. Total traveled distance: 283 km (176 miles). Travel time: 9-10 hours. Max. altitude: 4,550 masl (14,928 ft) Note: La Casualidad Mine Camp is subject to weather conditions. In case it cannot be reached, it will be replaced by Santa Maria Lagoon and the Arenal.
Day 7: Tolar Grande, Antofalla, Antofagasta de la Sierra. Before leaving Tolar Grande we will visit the “Ojos de Mar” (Sea Eyes), lagoons of turquoise water. At the end we travel through the Puna to reach Antofalla where we will have lunch. The trip continues through the Antofalla Salt Pit and Calaste Gorge. At sunset, arrival in Antofagasta de la Sierra. Accommodation. Dinner. Total traveled distance: 283 km (176 miles). Travel time: 9-10 hours. Max. altitude: 4,620 masl (15.157 ft)
Day 8: Antofagasta de la Sierra, Galán Volcano, Antofagasta de la Sierra. We depart from the hotel and after an hour we enter to a mark that will take us to the Galan volcano, whose crater is the largest one of the planet. The ascent is slow and after a little more than 1 hour we arrive at Laguna Grande (4,150 masl, 13,615 ft). This is the greatest colony of pink flamingos is in the Puna. It is located within site RAMSAR (International agreement of conservation and rational use of humidity). Continue ascending to get to the edge of the volcano. We enter its crater measuring 36 km long and 24 km wide. In its interior we visit the Laguna Diamante, fumaroles and thermal water. Continue by a desert landscape until get to the North barda, from there we descend and observe the Salar del Hombre Muerto (Dead Man salt Pit) and the vestiges of the Incahuasi Mine, old gold mine from the Inca time. Back to Antofagasta. Lunch and dinner. Total traveled distance: 350 km (217 miles). Travel time: 12 hours. Max. altitude: 4,760 masl (15,617 ft)
Day 9: Antofagasta de la Sierra, Pumice Stone Field, Cafayate. Early in the morning we depart to Cafayate and on the way we will visit one of the Catamarca’s Puna jewels, the Purnice field. During the trip we will admire the Carachi Pampa volcano, the Laguna Colorada where inhabit a pink flamingos colony and the volcano lava field. We continue and cross a field of sand to reach the purnice field. Here we can walk among these rock formations. Continuing towards Cafayate, we pass by Cuesta de Randolgo, Barranca Larga and Hualfin. Finnaly attive at Cafayate. Accommodation. Total traveled distance: 458 km (285 miles). Travel time: 11 hours. Max. altitude: 4,050 masl (13,287 ft)
Day 10: Cafayate, Salta. After a short visit to the city, return to Salta through the Cafayate Gorge with its strange formations product of the water erosion and of the wind. Arrival and accommodation. Total travelled distance: 192 km (119 miles). Travel time: 4 hours. Max. altitude: 1,660 masl (5,446 ft)
Day 11: Salta, Buenos Aires. At due time, transfer to the airport to board your scheduled flight.
Day 12: Flight from Dublin to Lima. Transfer to your hotel. Evening at leisure
Day 13: Arrival back to Dublin
