Sail to the end of the world, see majestic glaciers, imposing mountain peaks and incredible wildlife. This is a unique experience is not to be missed, you’ll have the opportunity to see the last pristine landscape in the world. This itinerary has some of the best wildlife and scenic highlights of the Antarctic.
This bucket list trip begins with your flight into Argentina where you will arrive in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, the “end of the earth”, where you’ll have 3 days to relax and explore before you the cruise.
Day 1: After meeting the expedition crew and settling into your cabin, the ship sets sail along the famous Beagle Channel.
Day 2 & 3: Crossing the Drake Passage: The Drake Passage stretches for just under 1,000km and is the spot where the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Seas converge, creating a roaring current where cold polar water sinks beneath the warmer northern waters. Along with usual high winds, a crossing of the Drake Passage can be quite the adventurous jouney. As we reach the South Shetland Islands, we will see our first icebergs. If conditions have been favourable in the Drake Passage, we will make our first shore landing on Day 3, accompanied by the lecturers and naturalists.
Day 4 – 7: South Shetland Islands & Antarctica: The itinerary will depend on weather conditions as we explore the area. The Antarctic Peninsula is a unspoiled wilderness with incredible landscapes and wildlife including penguins, seabirds, Weddell, crabeater and leopard seals as well as minke, killer (orca) and humpback whales. We aim to make at least two landings each day. Possible sites include Paradise Bay, Melchior Island, Cuverville Island, Portal Point, picturesque Neko Harbour and Pléneau Island. We hope to be able to navigate the Gerlache Strait, the striking Lemaire Channel and the majestic Neumayer Channel with its spectacular glaciers. We also hope to visit Paulet Island, home to blue-eyed cormorant colonies and 100,000 pairs of breeding Adélie penguins. If ice conditions permit we’ll also explore Petermann Island where a colony of gentoo penguins can be found.
Day 8 – 10: Return Drake Passage Crossing: Leaving Antarctica, the ship sets a course north to return across the Drake Passage to Ushuaia. There will also be a few final lectures to listen to as you relax on board and watch for the lights of Ushuaia. We are scheduled to arrive into the port of Ushuaia in the early morning, disembarking the ship after breakfast.
