Day 1: Arrival in Quito and transfer to your hotel. Evening at leisure
Day 2: Breakfast at the hotel. Pick up for Quito City Tour. At 2800 meters above sea level, Quito was the first city to be declared by UNESCO a World Cultural Heritage Site, in recognition of its historic, architectonic and artistic value. The City’s Historical Center, the largest and best preserved in Latin America, is a superb fusion of cultures and artistic styles.
Day 3: Day at leisure to explore Quito. Optional tour: Cotopaxi National Park Tour: The white-coned summit of the symmetrical Cotopaxi volcano takes pride of place along the avenue of the volcanoes. Named King of the Andes, the glaciated summit is located at 5897 meters above sea level and is the highest active volcano in the world.
Day 4: Breakfast at hotel. Pick up for transfer to Maship Reserve with a stop at the archaeological site of Tulipe to explore and learn about the Yumbo people. Arrive at Mashpi Lodge for lunch. Meet the naturalist guides for a quick briefing about the reserve and its activities. Over the next few days you have many activies options. Try out the “canopy gondola;” take a hike in search of wildlife; visit the Life Centre to learn about butterflies; climb up the Observation Tower to look for toucans, woodpeckers, parrots, and raptors. If you’d like, take advantage of the Sky Bike to take you from one sight to the next. After dinner, opt for a naturalist-led night walk. See moths as big as your hand, glow in the dark fungus, miniature tree frogs and hear the amazing night time wildlife orchestra, the forest at night is magical!
Day 5: Before breakfast, you can opt for an early morning pre dawn activity. This is when the birds are most active and calling. Return to the lodge for breakfast and plan your days activities. Perhaps today, visit the Hummingbird Viewpoint for a chance to see some of the 22 hummingbird species found in the reserve. Then walk to one of the nearby waterfalls and take a refreshing dip. Take a trek on the Capuchin or Howler monkey trail.
Day 6: This morning you may opt to visit one of the reserve’s four known leks where certain bird species—gather to perform captivating and often elaborate mating rituals. Otherwise enjoy breakfast and one more activity before lunch and afternoon departure. Transfer to Quito Airport for flight to Cuenca. Check in at hotel
Day 7: Breakfast at your hotel. Today you will enjoy a special trip through the city of Cuenca. It has also preserved its Colonial architecture, which is why it is an UNESCO world heritage site. You will walk down its narrow, cobble stoned streets, admiring its charming homes.
Day 8: Breakfast at the hotel. Day at leisure. Optional tour of Ingapirca. Ingapirca Fortress is without any doubt the most important archaeological vestige left by the Inca Civilisation in Ecuador. Despite several studies made in the area, it is still a mystery the use of this complex. With panoramic views, the sight of the Inca Empire’s only remaining sun temple is a sight to behold.
Day 9: Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to airport for return flight to Dublin
